Bud not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis is about a 10 year old boy named Bud, who is trying to find his dad. It’s been four years since his mom died, and ten-year-old Bud Caldwell takes off from his third foster home in search of a better way to live his life. He’s sick of being an orphan: unwanted, unloved, and all alone. On his own, he finds out how rough it is in Michigan in 1936, during the Great Depression. He meets many kind people along the way who help him complete his quest: to find the man that he thinks is his dad. He’s looking for a guy whose picture was on some old flyers for jazz concerts his mother kept around their house so he’s basically hopeless. Bud aims for “Herman E. Calloway and the Dusky Devastators of the Depression”, convinced that this is the man he is looking for.

Upon arriving at the establishment where Herman E. Calloway and his band are playing, Bud begins to tell his story . All the band members laugh at his statement but take sympathy for him because he’s an Orphan and let him join the band. Soon, he is driven to Calloway and the band’s house, where he looks around and finds several pictures of his mother. Bud notices, however, that Herman E. Calloway is far too old to be his father. Bud’s mother turned out to be Herman E. Calloway’s daughter, who had run away, and the man in the picture, who bud believes to be his dad is his grandfather.

The History that this book covers is the Great Depression. But Bud doesn’t really get affected by it because he is still a little kid, but the band that Bud later joins in the book talks about how hard it is to find jobs.

One of the most important moments in the book is when Bud meets his grandfather who he thought was his father. Bud always felt that he had no one. He did not have any family, but he especially did not have anyone who loved him. When he finds out that his grandfather is still alive, he is very excited. He finally has someone to lean on as a family. “Mr.Jimmy said, “Uh,uh, uh, that definitely is Angela Janet Calloway!(221)” This is the part where Bud shows the picture of his mom to one of the band members and he tells him that he knows her and that Mr.Calloway is Bud’s grandfather.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes reading funny books or touching books. This really touched my heart because I thought Buddy was so cute and I felt really bad for him when he was abused in the orphanage. But he meets his grandfather and I find that it is so great to have someone who really cares about you. This book is also very funny because everyone calls Bud Buddy and that is why the title name is “Bud, Not Buddy”. I hope people who read this book enjoy it as much as I do.
